Godfrey McCambridge was solid and added his special touch to Small Stars Theme. The multi-talented Max Dolby went from keyboards to trombone to melodica to harmonica, and added his vocals to the mix as well. Well, not only is Guy free to concentrate on vocals and hosting the show, Steele adds a whole other dimension of guitar playing.īuddy was his usual excellent self on sax and background vocals, and looked great in his dashing Mariachi outfit. Knowing Guy's talents on guitar, I had wondered why he didn't play lead himself. He sounded great on the SS staples, "True Hollywood Story," "Day Job," and "Small Stars Theme," and a surprising reggae-style rendition of "The Boys Are Back In Town." He tore it up on guitar as well, especially on "Boogie Stop Shuffle".Īnd speaking of guitar, what about Richard Steele? The man is a guitar god.

Guy was in top form, fleshing out the show with his usual mix of humorous stories and sardonic commentary. There are no weak links here every one shines. I realized during this show that every one of the members of The Small Stars is an outstanding musician. They even debuted a new song, called "Twenty-One," featuring Vic Odin on vocals. The setlist was a mix of SS regulars plus a bunch of covers. Starved as we are for good entertainment in S.A., the band was eagerly received and they seemed to feed off the energy of the appreciative audience.įor a measly $6 cover, the Stars played for almost 2 1/2 hours, even throwing in an encore. The crowd was a mix of family, friends, Casbeers regulars and accidental visitors. The guys were loose and seemed comfortable in the intimate surroundings of Casbeers, a nondescript restaurant / bar in a rather sketchy neighborhood near downtown San Antonio. Without the comedian or magician, or, sadly, the beautiful Cella Blue, the night was devoted to The Music. But this night at Casbeers they were cooking. I'd seen The Small Stars once before, during Happy Hour at the Continental Club in Austin.
