If we mistakenly believe that we can be happy and live our lives to their fullest without Christ, we are living in an illusion – and an illusion that brings spiritual death. In order to see clearly we need this light of Christ.

Christ truly is the only light in our world of darkness. As I reflect on this antiphon I am reminded that we all should be oriented properly in our lives and this proper perspective always has Christ at the center. From this Latin word “oriens” we get the English word ‘oriented’ and ‘orientation’.

The first words of this prayer in Latin are “O oriens” which can be translated as “O the East” or “O the morning star” or “O the Dawn”. O Radiant Dawn, splendor of eternal light, sun of justice, come and shine on those who dwell in darkness and in the shadow of death!
